COBURG PINE RIDGE CEMETERY

In 1971 the old Coburg Pine Ridge Cemetery reached capacity and management was transferred to the Fawkner Crematorium Memorial Trust. Since that time, burials at Coburg have been restricted to additional interments in existing graves at a rate, currently, of around one per month.
Records for this historic Cemetery begin in 1875 and show around 52,000 interments until 1971. There is evidence of burials dating back to the 1850s, however the records for those burials were maintained by each denomination group and are presumed lost.
Graves within the Coburg Pine Ridge Cemetery are subject to an unusual numbering system. Numbers are allocated not by position in rows, but by the order of burial sequence in each area. This meant visitors to the Cemetery encountered an apparently random numbering system, rather than progressing in a numerical sequence. In the 1920s this anomaly was addressed and the graves now have an 'old' number under the original system and a 'new', more accessible, location number.
