For
over one hundred years, Fawkner Memorial Park has been serving
the people of Victoria. Our history is one of dedication to the
community.
In
1906, the Municipal Cemetery, Fawkner (as we were then called) opened
to meet the needs of the city's flourishing north west. Our first
burial took place on 10 December 1906. This was considered to be
the unofficial opening of the cemetery.
In
1971, by an Act of Parliament, our name changed to Fawkner Memorial
Park. Originally established under the trusteeship of local mayors
and councilors, the Park passed into the management of an independent
Trust in 1971. Today, we are managed in accordance with the Cemeteries
& Crematoria Act 2003.
On
an average weekday, approximately 20 funeral services are conducted
here. This equates to well over 5,000 services per year, more than
half of which involve cremation.
Every
year more than two million visitors pass through our gates.
